On Jan. 19, approximately 350 people came out to The Park Theatre to support the South Osborne Syrian Refugee Initiative benefit concert.

Led by a group of neighbours, the initiative aimed to raise $60,000 to sponsor two Syrian families with relatives in Winnipeg to come to the city. The fundraiser succeeded in raising about $15,000, bringing the total to just under $73,000.

Organizers announced they will be increasing the goal to $90,000 to sponsor a third family. All three families are related to Winnipeggers Joseph Chaeban and his wife Zainab Ali.
