The 2021 Challenge for Life will take place from Aug. 5 to 17. Participants can engage in an activity of their choice in any location, to reach a distance of 20 kilometres or 200 minutes of exercise. They can walk, cycle, swim, run, or do a workout — anything from aerobics to Zumba! Activities can be completed in one day or spread over the 12 days.

Autumn Spulnick is eager to participate in this year’s Challenge for Life with her team, Canada Life’s Heroic Feet. This year she’ll be an ambassador for the event and will be bringing along her children, 12-year-old Skye for the first time and 13-year-old Adair for his third.

"I enjoy the event even more now that my children are joining me. I enjoy feeling like I am helping in some small way and seeing the pride my children have in taking part.  Adair, Skye and I will be participating for all those who have been affected by cancer," Spulnick said.
Despite the challenges of recruiting members during a pandemic, the 25-member team has been growing every year and successfully raising much-needed funds for the cause.

"Canada Life has been a huge supporter of our team, even matching our donations up to $10,000."
When Spulnick joined the Challenge for Life, she was looking for a way to get fit while doing some good for the community.

"I wanted something that would challenge me to get out and be active. The extra benefit of raising money to help the fight against cancer was a no-brainer. So, I registered and walked the first year solo, the second year with a corporate team at Deloitte that I set up, and the last three years have been with Canada Life."

This year’s challenge will be unique for Spulnick and her children, as they plan to head to Alberta to do a hike in the mountains, a welcome first for them.  Meanwhile, the other members of Canada Life’s Heroic Feet will do their part at home in Manitoba.

"Cancer is a battle we all need to fight; it isn’t going anywhere and with many Manitobans and Canadians affected, there isn’t much I can do to help — but I can walk and raise funds. I can encourage my children and lead by example. I can show them that even by doing the smallest actions, we can help create big outcomes. By getting our children and youth involved at a young age, we are hopefully creating participants for years to come to help the battle against cancer - because we can!"
