The 2021 Challenge for Life will take place from Aug. 5 to 17. Participants can engage in an activity of their choice in any location, to reach a distance of 20 kilometres or 200 minutes of exercise. They can walk, cycle, swim, run, or do a workout - anything from aerobics to Zumba! Activities can be completed in one day or spread over the 12 days

Taking part in the Challenge for Life has been a yearly tradition for Evelyn Fey and her family since the event began in 2008. The Klaw’d Hoppers is a family team and includes her husband Garth and their sons Matthew and Noah. This year, Fey’s sister-in-law Linda will be joining the team.

In December 2005, Fey’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.  The family was devastated and needed to do something to deal with the pain.

"Early in 2006, my mom noticed a fundraising walk event called the Weekend to End Breast Cancer in the paper. We thought this is something we can do to raise funds and honour my mom. The walk took place in June of 2006 and Garth and I raised over $4,000. Sadly a month later, on July 20, 2006, my mom passed away from complications," Fey explained.

"We felt so helpless and wanted to do something to honour her, so when the Challenge for Life event came to be, we jumped at the opportunity to make a difference."
This year’s event is once again a personal one for Fey.

"A week before Christmas 2020, my husband Garth was diagnosed with solitary plasmacytoma, a form of cancer that attaches itself to one part of the body and grows. He has been through five-and-a-half weeks of radiation therapy, and right now we are in a holding pattern to see what comes next. The large tumor that he has in his lower back cannot be removed, but the radiation is supposed to kill the cancer cells. So our trust is in the doctors and amazing staff at CancerCare Manitoba and thus far they have definitely made us proud."

The Klaw’d Hoppers team hopes to do four five-kilometre walks in different parts of the Interlake. The family team has raised over $21,000 since 2008.

"The Challenge for Life gives us hope that one day we will be rid of this disease, and if we participate together it makes us stronger in the end," Fey said.
