Special to Canstar

Challenge for Life is a unique annual event designed to improve public health and raise money and awareness for all cancers. All funds raised support leading edge research, clinical trials, and patient care at CancerCare Manitoba. Participants commit to raising a minimum of $250 while taking an active role in maintaining their physical health and reducing their personal cancer risks.

The 2021 Challenge for Life will take place from Aug. 5 to 17. Participants can engage in an activity of their choice in any location, to reach a distance of 20 kilometres or 200 minutes of exercise. They can walk, cycle, swim, run, or do a workout - anything from aerobics to Zumba. Activities can be completed in one day or spread over the 12 days

Cameryn Carlos will be participating in the Challenge for Life for the first time this year and she’ll be doing it on her own, using her love for sports and staying active in a positive and impactful way.

Inspired by her mother’s experience with cancer, Carlos is grateful for the opportunity to help others through this event.

"In 2019 my mom was diagnosed with cancer, and her journey really impacted me and opened my eyes to the struggles that people living with cancer face. Nearly everyone has been affected by cancer in some way, whether they have been diagnosed, or know of someone who has cancer," Carlos said.

To honour her mother, Carlos is taking on the Challenge for Life to make a difference in the lives of others who struggle with cancer as well.

"By watching her throughout her cancer journey, she has taught me so much. No matter how hard it got, she always had joy in her heart. Her ability to remain strong and face such a terrible disease really spoke to me. She has set such a good example for me and I have learned so much from her strength, so that is why I am participating in honour of her."

Carlos appreciates that every dollar raised will be used for research and to help those living with cancer.

She plans to swim for her 200 minutes/20 kilometres of activity if pools are open, but if they’re not, she will do a combination of cycling and running.

"I saw how many resources my mom had access to during her treatment. The level of support from CancerCare was amazing and I hope that the same treatments and supports are available for others, if they need it. As a family we appreciate the opportunity to raise funds for cancer and give back. To be able to raise money and involve myself in this challenge truly means a lot to me."

Carlos is already looking forward to participating in the Challenge for Life for many years to come.
