Looking ahead to 2023

As January comes to a quick close, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, visiting with family and friends. The start to 2023 has been mild and many are taking advantage of the warmer temperatures and enjoying many of the seasonal activities.
The beginning of the year has been busy with community celebrations, traditional holiday festivities and a return to celebrated cultural events. Lohri Mela, hosted by Asian Women of Winnipeg, a celebration of new beginnings, welcomed new family members through birth and marriage to the community. Chinese New Year celebrations began on Jan. 22 and continue through Feb. 5. This year we welcome the year of the rabbit, a year that symbolizes longevity, peace, and prosperity.
After a three-year hiatus, St. Norbert Heritage Day will be celebrated on Feb. 4. Heritage Days brings community together and celebrates the unique history of St. Norbert and the surrounding area. The day begins with a pancake breakfast at 10 a.m. at the St. Norbert Community Centre and will include a variety of entertainment and indoor and outdoor activities throughout the day, ending with a fireworks display. Everyone is encouraged to come out and take part in the many activities and learn about St. Norbert’s rich and diverse history.

February is I Love to Read Month, a month-long celebration of all things reading that promotes the importance of literacy. This year, the Manitoba Reading Association’s I Love to Read Month theme is: “Stories Connect Us: We Are More Alike Than Different.”
This is not only a wonderful theme, but it’s also very important. We all have an important story to tell, and we should be encouraged to share those stories, but we also need to be open and willing to listen to other people’s stories as well. Canada, and Manitoba in particular, is such a diverse place to live, and we should all be doing our part to continue fostering that diversity and helping to create a more accepting and understanding environment for everyone. I am excited to participate in this year’s I Love to Read Month festivities by visiting the local schools, reading to the students, and sharing with them the value and joy of reading.
