The Transcona Council for Seniors was established in 1993 and its primary role is to assist seniors to remain living in the community as long as possible.

The goal is to link adults aged 55 years and older with resources that can assist with daily living and enhance quality of life. They offer activities and assist with referrals to programs in the Transcona area.

The council organizes education classes, support groups, outings and health and wellness programs for Transcona seniors and provides information on topics relevant to today.

There are a number of weekly activities currently being offered to seniors, including yoga, art classes, iPad classes, line dancing, Zumba, pickleball and floor curling.

Colleen Tackaberry, senior resource finder for the Transcona Council for Seniors explained that the council also has volunteer drivers that assist seniors to get to medical or dental appointments, if they are unable to arrange alternative transportation.

The council sponsors meals three days a week at two different locations in Transcona. Seniors can enjoy a nutritious meal while socializing with friends and neighbours. Participants must register if they plan to attend or arrange for pick up or delivery.

The council also provides information to residents on-line, covering a variety of topics such as arthritis resources and scams targeting seniors.

Understanding the importance of social contact, the council organizes group outings for seniors at various times throughout the year.

This month, the council is offering an income tax clinic at Access Transcona (845 Regent Ave.) This is a special program in that it is open to low-income residents of Transcona, regardless of their age.

Please note that there is a charge for some of the activities and events, while others are available at no cost to the individual.

If you have a few hours a week to spare, the Transcona Council for Seniors is looking for volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include clerical work, meal preparation, event planner, board member and driver.

The Transcona Council for Seniors is a charitable organization and provides income tax receipts for any financial donations they receive.
