Rudy Gross hopes that investing in a display booth at the 2017 Winnipeg Renovation Show will open doors for his family business.

Gross, 56, his daughter Pauline, 32, and sons Elias, 31, and Steve, 23, run Karufa Windows and Doors (44 Railway Ave.) in Brunkild. Gross said his youngest daughter Krista, who is in high school, also pitches in at times.

Gross’ father Mike started in the window and door business about 35 years ago when he and his family lived on Iberville Hutterite Colony near Elie. Gross said he helped his father and gradually learned the skills needed for proper installation.

Gross said he left the colony about 16 years ago because of religious differences.

“I call myself a Hutter-left,” he said.

He opened Karufa Windows and Doors in 2001 and located the business in Lockport, Man. before moving to Brunkild, which is closer to the Gross family’s home, five years ago.

Gross makes a point of seeking out top-quality, Canadian-made products.

“We always try to get the best. Most doors will easily leak at the bottom,” he said.

Gross is now ordering doors made by a Winkler, Man. company that uses parts manufactured in Germany. He believes these doors offer a better fit.

Elias and Steve work as installers. By doing a reliable job of installing their doors and windows, Gross said they are able to generate new business through word-of-mouth.

“We do an awesome job of installing and our customers will recommend us,” he said.

While the company has participated in the annual Winnipeg Home & Garden Show in previous years, this will be its first time at the Renovation Show that runs at RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg from Jan. 13 to 15. Gross said they had to pay a high price for their booth, which is No. 718, but are counting on meeting new customers at the show.

Gross said they don’t typically work with contractors, instead dealing directly with their customers.  A sales representative helps to generate business as well.
