Stephen Prince, 38, is running for the Liberal Party in Portage la Prairie, challenging PC incumbent Ian Wishart.
Prince calls Portage la Prairie and Long Plain First Nation home. He works as a licensing and lottery compliance manager with the Long Plain First Nation Gaming Commission and also operates Prince Ogitchita Martial Arts in Portage.
He said he decided to stand for election as MLA to fulfil his desire to improve the relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal residents.
"I want to bridge the cultural gap between the First Nations and non-First Nations in Portage la Prairie," he said.
Prince said he also believes that, if elected, he can help boost the local economy.
He looks to his father, who served as a band councillor, and other ancestors as examples of people who have served as leaders of their communities.
He feels that his martial arts training will also prove to be useful in helping him in his political campaign. He said he’s a Team Canada member in sikaran and was named to the World Brotherhood’s Hall of Fame. Sikaran is a Filipino martial art that involves mostly hand and foot fighting.
