Area businesswoman ready for close up in Hollywood

Majda Ficko is about to go Hollywood.
Ficko, who owns Olen Cosmetics Corp., has been invited to be part of the Boom Boom Room gifting suite at the Golden Globe Awards in January.
The suite is for celebrities who are pregnant or have children. Her product, Baby Butz Cream, which is a 100% natural cream for diaper rash, will be on display for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars to take home.
“I will present it and talk about it to anyone, but I don’t know all the celebrities. I have to prepare myself on who’s who,” said Ficko, who lives in East St. Paul.
Ficko, who also owns the Hair Do Zoo kids hair salons in St. Vital and Tuxedo, said she originally created the cream with the help of a research chemist for her son.
Demitri was born with a rare syndrome and has to be in diapers 24 hours a day. His condition forced Ficko to learn everything she could about diaper rashes.
Ficko initially purchased a prescribed cream from a pharmacy at the Children’s Hospital. When the pharmacy closed, she was unable to find another similar product, so she decided to develop one herself.
Baby Butz hit the shelves in February of this year following a three-year wait to have it licensed by Health Canada as a natural health product.
“I tried everything on the market, but nothing was working,” she said. “My doctor told me what was in it, and I took it to a research chemist to develop the cream.”
Susan Meseyton, manager of E-Children, a baby and children’s store located on Princess Street, said she expects celebrities will snap up Ficko’s product.
“We have people that specifically make the trip all the way downtown to buy it,” Meseyton said.
“Everybody who has used the product has had only positive feedback about it.”
Leigh Melville Lachance, a mother of two, said Baby Butz was a revelation when she started using it on her kids.
“My son use to have really bad diaper rashes, and my daughter, as soon as she develops a rash I put it on and it’s gone,” Melville Lachance said.
Ficko said she never planned to sell the cream, but once people saw how well it worked for her son, she was convinced to put it on the market.
“I made a miracle cream for my miracle child, so if other babies can benefit from it, great,” she said.
