Students in one of Winnipeg’s fastest growing neighbourhoods will have the chance to learn in both official languages.

Officials at Louis Riel School Division have announced that the new school in Sage Creek will be a dual-track school for both English program and French immersion students. News of the construction of a new school in the southeast Winnipeg community was announced earlier this year.

“We remain dedicated to single-track French immersion schools as per our division’s historical and policy commitment,” said LRSD’s superintendent Duane Brothers in a news release.

“At this time, and according to our projections, at the date of the Sage Creek School’s scheduled opening in September 2016, we will not have enough students to justify a single-track school — English or French immersion. As well, the schools presently housing students from Sage Creek are at capacity and will soon be overcapacity.”

Officials say the division has implemented dual-track schools in the past in light of similar demographic circumstances, and it will monitor registration and the needs of the students and their families in the community.

Brothers added the division intends to return to single-track programming in Sage Creek as enrolment numbers make this preference viable: “We will continue to request an additional new school in this community to return to the single-track system our division’s legacy has been built upon.”

This announcement comes on the heels of the news the division is working with community members in south St. Vital to find a workable long-term solution to tackle overflowing enrolment in French immersion schools in the area.

Officials are set to hold a Sage Creek School Design Workshop on Thurs., Oct. 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Legacy Centre at 900 St. Mary’s Rd., which is aimed at stakeholders including students, parents, community members, trustees, educators and daycare providers.
