Two fitness-focused sisters are giving girls new to Canada a helping hand in finding opportunities to take part in sports and activities.

According to a news release, Fitness Communications co-founders Allison Gervais and Andrea Katz, with support from Playing 4 A Purpose Foundation, have organized a three free sessions for newcomer girls in Winnipeg to showcase a variety of sports and help demonstrate what the local sporting community for girls is all about.

The three sport days will take place on July 10 and 31, and Aug. 14 at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex, located at 999 Sargent Ave. Gervais and Katz hopes to be able to facilitate 20 girls aged between eight and 15 at the sessions, which will include artistic swimming, kickboxing, yoga, hip hop dance, and jazz dance.

“We are on a mission to increase sport and activity participation for girls in Canada,” said Katz, who lives in Norwood Grove, in the release. “We want to ensure girls of all ages and backgrounds are included in this mission, and want to give parents and girls access to resources and activities in our great city. This event is a starting point for this.”

Organizers say newcomer youth to Canada often face a number of challenges, including but not limited to exclusion, poverty and separation. Research shows that newcomer girls and women are the most underrepresented population in the sport and physical activity system in Canada.

Prospective participants need to register for the sessions, and girls interested in registering can email info@fitcommunications.ca to sign up. Spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
