New chocolate creations to commemorate Manitoba Day

A local chocolatier has come up with a deliciously stylish way to celebrate Manitoba Day.

Constance Menzies, owner of Chocolatier Constance Popp (180 Provencher Blvd.), will be creating a box of chocolates celebrating 12 notable Manitobans in time for Manitoba Day, which is on May 12.

Menzies said six women and six men were chosen as symbols to be created on the chocolates, which range from figures from early Manitoba history to notable modern-day heroes. As a taster, Menzies revealed that two of the individuals that will adorn the chocolates will be Chief Peguis and Clara Hughes.

Renowned Winnipeg artist and muralist Charlie Johnston will be hand-painting the symbols on the chocolate, Menzies said.

The chocolates will also be accompanied by a booklet, which will include a short biography about each of the 12, as well as a list of their names and a list of the symbols so that recipients of the chocolates can match the names with the symbols.

"It’s a fun, lovely way to acknowledge 12 super cool Manitobans," Menzies told The Lance. "We also deliberately chose characters that represent different geographical regions of Manitoba, including Churchill."

Menzies said the chocolates will be available from May 10. Visit constancepopp.com to learn more about Chocolatier Constance Popp.

Riverbank-focused open house to be held at Norwood CC on May 12

The City of Winnipeg will hold an open house regarding a stretch of riverbank in Norwood.

Community members are invited to the event, which will focus on the Lyndale Drive retaining wall, located between Monck Avenue and Gauvin Street, which is nearing the end of its life cycle and requires rehabilitation or replacement, officials say.

The open house will be held on May 12 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (drop-in) at Norwood Community Centre, located at 87 Walmer St.

The purpose of the Lyndale Drive Retaining Wall Study is to develop a preliminary design that will stabilize the riverbank and protect the city’s flood defences, utilities and roadway infrastructure from riverbank movements.

The event will showcase a number of design and stabilization techniques for this section of riverbank, including new active transportation options, and visitors will be able to review and provide feedback on three design concepts.
