Local teens get out and go to work

It’s summer and for 10 local teens, that means it’s time to get outside and visit as many destinations as possible.

For its third year running, the Get Out of the Basement program, organized by McKim Communications Group, is giving a group of Winnipeg teens the chance to explore the province while working full-time and gaining skills.

The group attends events such as the Fringe Festival, Folklorama and the Carmen County Fair and comes up with different ways to promote them, be it blogging, posting to Instagram or making videos.

“We’ve done canoeing outside of Winnipeg in Oak Hammock Marsh, we’ve gone fishing… we’re going to be going to Interstellar Rodeo,” Sam Sawchuk said.

Sawchuk is in his third year of the program, and he says it’s grown and changed every year. For him, Jordan Medeiros and Ryan Steel, it’s a great way to learn more about the city and province while learning skills about media, promotions, advertising and journalism.

On the day they spoke with The Metro, the trio were visiting Mordens’ of Winnipeg chocolates (674 Sargent Ave.) in the West End, where they had the chance to don hairnets and sneak behind the scenes at the chocolate-making process.

“We’re about to go film,” Steel said, pointing to his camera bag. “This week is neighbourhood week, so all 10 of us are out in different neighbourhoods so we’re just making Instagram posts and then making a big blog post compiling it, and there will be a video as well of us interviewing people on the street about what their favourite neighbourhood is.”

Steel and Sawchuk are from Fort Garry, while Medeiros is from St. James. The neighbourhood project has given them a closer look at areas of the city that they aren’t as familiar with.

“I didn’t know where some of the places were that people were talking about, and then it’s like, that’s sounds kind of cool, we should check it out,” Medeiros said. “It’s fun learning about things that you can go do and not knowing about them before, then you’re more educated.”

Medeiros said she’s most interested in the advertising aspect of the program.

“It’s cool to see so many advertisements every single day and to be a part of catching peoples’ attention. I like that,” she said. “You learn a lot of stuff while you’re out promoting.”

“I love visual arts,” Sawchuk said. “I like doing something that’s visually appealing and has a good idea behind it.”

Steel, on the other hand, hopes to end up in film.

“I get to edit and we do so many videos instead of working months on one,” he said. “There’s an event to promote so I’ve learned a lot about making movies on a deadline.”

The three agree it’s been a great bonding experience and are happy to see the program reach so many people on social media.
