It’s a busy time of year

The fall season has always been traditionally a busy time for families and this year has been no exception. Our students have gone back to school and we are preparing our homes, cottages and yards for the onset of winter.  

The Manitoba legislature resumed on Oct. 6 to complete the final stages of implementing Budget 2021, which helps make life more affordable for Manitobans while providing support in the fight against COVID-19.

The condensed two-week sitting will focus on completing the Budget 2021 financial process, including the introduction and passage of the Budget Implementation and Tax Statutes Amendment Act.

The Manitoba government recently provided $75,000 in funding to support Truth and Reconciliation

Week 2021 (Sept. 27 – Oct. 1) and events led by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. 

These events included workshops, activities for students, and cultural performances by First Nations, Métis and Inuit artists. The province has also recognized the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30 as an observance to encourage reflection and meaningful discussions about the affects of residential schools.

On Sept. 26, I was pleased to speak on behalf of the Manitoba government at the annual Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police Memorial Service, which was held this year at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

The Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember these officers and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the unique risks of being a police officer in Canada and to recognize all those families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty. We must never forget their sacrifices.

Fire Prevention Week kicked off on Oct. 3 and this year’s theme is “Know the Sounds of Fire Safety’.”  

I joined fire and paramedic chief Christian Schmidt, city councillors Sherri Rollins, Markus Chambers and Devi Sharma, members of the fire and paramedic services and Sparky the fire dog at City Hall to speak of the importance of fire safety.  

The campaign highlights the value of learning the different alarm sounds of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and what to do when you hear them.  These messages of safety awareness save lives and protect Manitobans.

Finally, I would like to congratulate our member of Parliament, Marty Morantz, for winning his second term in the riding of Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley. I look forward to working with him in Assiniboia.
