An upcoming public hearing will examine increasing the speed limit along a portion of Roblin Boulevard, but some business owners along the strip have reservations about the proposal.
On Dec. 4, the provincial Highway Traffic Board will meet to discuss increasing the speed limit on Roblin between Haney and Wexford streets from 50 to 60 km/h.
However, Cindy Mirecki, owner of Charleswood Florist, said the area is prone to accidents, especially at the intersection of Roblin and Laxdal near her business.
"It’s a business area. It’s just a really bad idea," said Mirecki, who has been at her current location for the last 18 years.
Customers often complain that it’s hard to cross Roblin as it is, Mirecki added, noting two daycares and a school are located nearby.
Mirecki believes the stretch of Roblin needs another set of traffic lights at Laxdal rather than a speed increase.
"It’s a difficult corner," she said. "There are accidents there on a continual basis."
The traffic board sets road speeds across the province.
The speed increase is just one of several being considered at 20 locations across the city, according to board chair Al Rivers.
The reviews are part of year-long study the traffic board commissioned to a local engineering firm to determine the percentage of vehicles at or above the speed limit on four-lane divided roadways across the city, he said.
"The study indicates perhaps some speeds should be adjusted," Rivers said.
"Now we want to find out how the public feels about it."
Dawn Rowntree, owner of Fazes Hair Studio, said she supports an increase in speed, admitting she often travels up to 60 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
However, given the dense business district lining Roblin, which includes a youth dance studio, she does have concerns.
"I wouldn’t be opposed to 60 for my own driving habits," said Rowntree, who lives in the West End.
"But I would rather the kids be safe than me be allowed to drive faster."
In business at the corner of Roblin and Laxdal for 12 years, Rowntree believes another set of lights there will aggravate the stop-and-go traffic that already exists with the many intersections along the stretch of Roblin.
"You can’t make U-turns at the corner, but people do anyway," she said, noting people often cut through strip mall parking lots to navigate around the area.
"People are all over the place. People are stopping and nobody’s using their signals."
A four-way stop might be a better solution while keeping the speed limit along the strip at 50 km/h, she said.
At the Dec. 4 meeting, the board will also consider increasing the speed on Corydon Avenue from Kelvin to Cambridge streets from 50 to 60 km/h.
If both proposals are approved, the seven-kilometre stretch from Roblin and Haney to Corydon and Cambridge would become 60 km/h.
The Highway Traffic Board is located at 200-301 Weston St., near Logan Avenue.
The meeting will begin at 10 a.m.
