A new pharmacy popped up in West Winnipeg on Portage Avenue at the beginning of May and two lifelong locals are behind the counter.
St. Francois Xavier resident Ryan Buffie has been working in the pharmacy industry for 14 years and recently decided it was time to open his own business. The new,independently-owned pharmacy, Assiniboine Pharmacy (D-3111 Portage Ave.) is located north of Portage Avenue in the strip mall beside Steve’s Bistro. Buffie is excited about the fresh opportunities inherent in owning and operating his own business.
"What we are really trying to focus on here is having great patient care and putting the patient first," Buffie said. "We want to spend more time with patients, talk to them more, make sure they understand how their medications are to be used and really just try to improve their overall health."
Buffie teamed up with another local pharmacist — Headingley resident and pharmacist of 29 years, Julie Penelton — to lend extra help and expertise to the endeavour. Penelton says the individualized service is the aspect she is looking forward to the most while working part-time at Assiniboine Pharmacy. She says the goal is to know customers by name when they come in the door and create more of a small-town pharmacy within the big city.
The new pharmacy offers free parking for its patients, direct calling without automated services, easy prescription transfers and is certified to carry out injections.
Buffie is also looking forward to following up on medication reviews in people’s homes to take their level of personalized service to the next level. Assiniboine Pharmacy is connected to the Pharmasave franchise, allowing the store to use Pharmasave brand products, programs and support systems while still remaining independent.
Buffie and Penelton are both thrilled to be taking on this new adventure within the community and are hosting the store’s official grand opening the first week of June.
The store opened May 1 and can be contacted at 204-615-1144.
