There are four candidates running for school trustee in Winnipeg School Division’s Ward 5 and Ward 6, one trustee will be elected in each ward. Ward 4 incumbent Lisa Naylor was running unopposed and has been acclaimed. School trustee candidates in Ward 5: In his bid for a second term as WSD school trustee, Kevin Freedman is pledging to “always make decisions that will be best for the division as a whole, not just narrow special interests.” He holds a master’s degree in non-profit leadership with a focus on board governance and sits on numerous boards, including as a director with the Assiniboine Credit Union board. He works as an instructor in the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Winnipeg and has received accolades from the Governor General of Canada, YMCA Canada, and the Province of Manitoba. He lives in the ward with his wife, daughter and son. Cindy Murdoch grew up in the North End and moved to the city centre to attend university, where she has lived, worked and volunteered ever since. She has 20 years of experience working in the arts, non-profit, public and labour sectors. Currently she is the Manitoba Representative for the Canadian Labour Congress and volunteers with organizations that help build inclusive, diverse, strong and healthy communities in Winnipeg. Murdoch’s husband immigrated to Canada from Mexico 10 years ago and they recently became new parents. She is running for trustee to bring “unique, innovative, and positive ideas to the Winnipeg School Division board.” School trustee candidates in Ward 6: Yijie Chen lives in the West End with her husband and two young children. She came to Canada from China to complete a master’s degree in kinesiology at the University of Manitoba with a focus on healthy communities. Chen is running for trustee to “advocate for underrepresented communities and to help support a high quality and sustainable education system for families.” Her platform focuses on improving education outcomes in math, literacy, science and phys-ed.
