Dear Santa,

I know that you keep naughty and nice lists and I have no doubt that there would be many a name on both.

I am not sure that I should admit this and if you ever repeat it, I will deny it — but, every now and then, I might have made a brief appearance on the naughty list. That said, when push came to shove, I have, for the most part, been good.

Supplied photo Correspondent Debbie Ristimaki reminds Santa Claus that people have faced a lot of challenges this year.

So, yes Santa, I am trying to make a case to ensure that I am on the right list when the big day rolls around. It has been a difficult year — filled with challenges of all sorts.  I have been jabbed, not once but twice.  I wear a mask and social distancing is now ingrained in my psyche.

Oh, and yes, I have no qualms about showing my driver’s license and a vaccination card in order to enjoy a meal at one of our favourite restaurants.

I do it for others.  I do it for us.

I have stood in line outside of Ikea in the dead of winter and queued up in the Starbucks drive-thru with only one bar on my gas gauge, only to get to the window to find out that they ran out of my coffee. I have been unable to use my garage for months as we waited for a new garage door, and I have had to develop a lot of patience when it comes to arranging for service calls.

Yes, I am aware that these and many of the other challenges we faced this year can appear trivial to some and, on many levels, I would agree. But they represent examples of the reality that we have been dealt and I do think that I have met them head on.

If being on the nice list means having your wishes comes true, Santa, I wish for an end to the pandemic and a return to some sort of normalcy. At least one where you don’t have to wonder if the person next to you is carrying a contagious virus and where alpha, beta, delta, and omicron are only references to letters of the Greek alphabet.

Regardless of which list you may find yourself on, I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season.

Merry Christmas!
