The happiest place on Earth has lived up to its name for Fort Richmond’s Chris Reid.
On July 4, the voiceover artist’s work premiered in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, and with his voice booming over the loudspeaker into Frontier Land, Reid accomplished a goal of contributing to the magic of all four Disney World parks.
"That was a really special moment," Reid said. "This was a Disney dream come true."
Reid, 36, got his start as a voiceover artist at local radio stations in the city, lending his pipes to commercials and newscasts for a number of years. In 2014, he looked to diversify his portfolio and was connected with an entertainment company that threw dance parties in the Disney World theme parks.
The company requested a demo of liners (pre-recorded, voice-only segues) they could play at their upcoming "Coolest Summer Ever" dance party at Disney’s Hollywood Studio, and Reid landed the job.
Recording and engineering the audio from his home studio, Reid’s voice work has since been heard by thousands of visitors to Disney World in the Epcot park — on New Year’s Eve no less — and in the Animal Kingdom park on a daily basis.
For Reid, who has been to Disney World more than a dozen times and boasts a Haunted Mansion-inspired tattoo, the gig was a perfect fit.
"When you do radio, you get used to hearing yourself… but hearing it in my most favourite place, ever, was really surreal," he said.
Reid said his fandom was sparked about 22 years ago, when he travelled to Disney World for the first time with his family.
"It was the music that stuck with me," he explained. "With the different themed lands and different music, I’d remember it, and it was the easiest thing to remember the trip by, but in 1997 there was no access to that music, so I’d be going to music stores trying to find CDs.
"I obsessed over the music for a long time."
With one big bucket list item crossed off, Reid is hoping to continue to lend his voice to the happenings at Disney World, and with a little luck (or a spell from a fairy godmother or two) he’ll catch the ear of the right person.
In the meantime, Reid co-hosts a podcast on all things Disney called Magic 24.7 with Ashley Coggins (from Florida) and Krystal Chiarolla (of Washington State). The show covers travel tips, Disney Parks news, movies, and more.
"Disney has consumed so much of my life as a kid, but also as an adult. I have no shame," he said. "I love it that much and it’s so hard being in Winnipeg and having it thousands of kilometres away.
"So anything I can do, whether it’s the voice work or the podcast, to vocalize it and bring it to the masses, and the Disney community online, I take it."
