With the end of the school year comes time to celebrate our students on all their hard work and dedication. Our schools have seen some excellent milestones pass by lately, and the local student athletes have been getting some much-deserved recognition. Vincent Massey Collegiate (VMC) Coach Liam Francis is extremely proud of his students’ accomplishments this year. According to him, the VMC track and field teams have been on fire for the past two years, especially the female athletes. The girls cross-country team won its third provincial championship in five years, and the girls junior varsity basketball team won the AAAA championship. Both teams are some of strongest in the province and nearly always contend in the provincial championships. Two athletes really stood out this year—Kyla Roy as a top Canadian triathlete and Victoria Tachinski as the top high school runner in North America. Victoria has broken Canadian records both indoor and outdoor, most recently at the High School Championships in North Carolina where she won the 800-metre by almost three seconds. She will be competing for Canada this summer at the World Junior Championships in Poland. Congratulations and good luck Victoria! Athletes like Victoria benefit from VMC’s inclusive and comprehensive athletic extra-curricular programs, staffed by great coaches who work hard to give every student an opportunity to succeed. But VMC isn’t the only school that’s been taking home the gold. Collège Churchill High School is celebrating 20 female athletes who were awarded Most Valuable Player in several sports including curling, rugby, water polo, basketball, cross country, track and field, and volleyball. These young women are making names for themselves and their school communities, while promoting active living among their peers. From entry level to elite athletes, Fort Garry-Riverview girls have given excellent and inspiring performances this year. When I hear the end-of-year round up from our local coaches it makes me proud to be the MLA for our community. Congratulations to all and happy summer. If you would like to get in touch with me you can call my office at 204-475-2270 or email me at James.Allum@YourManitoba.ca
