The Assiniboine Park Zoo will be closed for 10 days, beginning June 23, in order to complete some final preparations for the opening of the Journey to Churchill exhibit.
"Journey to Churchill is the signature exhibit in the redevelopment of Assiniboine Park Zoo and we want the Zoo looking its absolute best," said Don Peterkin, Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s Chief Operations Officer, in a news release. "The closure will give our animals time to acclimatize to their new surroundings and allow us to complete all the final construction details and finishing touches. On July 3 we will be ready to share Journey to Churchill with the world."
The zoo will reopen to the public at noon on Thurs., July 3. Visitors will enter through the new entrance at 2595 Roblin Blvd., which will feature a welcoming plaza, dedicated visitor services centre and a new gift shop. Special activities like face painting and a performance by Fred Penner are planned for the exhibit’s opening weekend.
Following the opening weekend, the zoo will resume its normal summer hours, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
