Name this filly for prizes and glory
Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 16/05/2017 (1915 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
There’s a one-year-old filly born in Russell, Man. that you’re invited to name to celebrate the fact this is the 250th anniversary of horse racing in Canada. The contest is sponsored by this newspaper and other papers in the Canstar Community News chain and you have a month to think about a name.
Ready to give it try? Email your filly name (you may submit up to two names) along with your name, address and daytime phone number to email@example.com
Entry deadline is Fri., June 16 at noon. Take note: The name cannot be longer than 18 characters, including spaces between words, and cannot be a proper name.
I will be judging the names along with someone from Canstar and Sherisse Ziprick, who has been breeding horses with her husband, Cam, for years in Russell including Jon’s Golden Run, named for 2010 Olympic gold medallist (and Russell hero) Jon Montgomery and Gold N Sochi, named for the 2014 Sochi gold medal curling team led by Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones.
Horses the Zipricks breed have a habit of enjoying a lot of success — and maybe the filly you name will have you smiling broadly and give you glory in the Winner’s Circle, too!
Prizes: Canstar will award the winner with a suite for 16 at a Goldeyes game and Assiniboia Downs will throw in $250, representing the 250th anniversary of horse racing. The winner will be presented with his or her prizes in the Winner’s Circle at Assiniboia Downs on Canstar Day at the Races, July 1. (July 1, 1767 was the day the first horse race was held in Canada — in Quebec City on the Plains of Abraham, site of the famous battle.)
To get into the mood, why not head out to Assiniboia Downs this long weekend? There’s racing Friday and Saturday night (parade to post 7:15 p.m.) and an afternoon card with family fun on holiday Monday at 1:15 p.m. Have fun coming up with a name — and good luck!
