River East boys golf team finishes third at provincials
Anyway you slice it, River East Collegiate’s boys golf team had a strong showing at the recent provincial tournament.
The team, made up of players Cash McNabb, Austin Boge, Ryan Pellaers, and Brayden Boge and coached by Marty Grubert, finished third on May 27 at Minnewasta Golf & Country Club in Morden, Man., shooting a collective 252. St. Paul’s finished first, shooting 223, while Dauphin Regional shot 238 to finish second.
“It was a very scrambled season,” admitted coach Marty Grubert. “We hadn’t had (high school) golf for two years. But we had some range time and some time at Rossmere.”
In the provincial tournament, Grade 9 players Cash McNabb and Brayden Boge both shot in the 70s, while their Grade 11 teammates shot in the 80s. While they were disappointed — Austin Boge, Grubert noted, shot better in the practice round — the experience is something to build off for next year.
“We should have everyone back,” Grubert said, noting that fifth player Spencer Malbranck-Nuytten joined the team for a tournament in Steinbach on May 30, which the team ended up winning, beating out St. Paul’s following a countback after finishing tied after 18 holes. “We were pleased with that.”
