Reichert, Cameron recognized as MCAC athletes of the week

With the holiday season break over and the next stage of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season underway, two south Winnipeg athletes have been recognized for their on-court achievements for the week ending Jan. 15.

In the seventh week of the women’s volleyball season, Canadian Mennonite University Blazers beat the league-leading Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges recently — and first-year left side Layla Reichert played a key part in the win.

According to a news release, Reichert registered 11 kills, a team-high 17 digs, three service aces and two solo blocks to help the second-place Blazers to a four-set win on Jan. 13.

As well, in the third week of the men’s basketball season, the Blazers also beat Les Rouges in back-to-back wins on Jan. 13 and Jan. 14.

According to the release, first-year forward Daniel Cameron had a significant role in the success of the Tuxedo-based team during that weekend, registering 41 points and 38 rebounds.

Vincent Massey’s Paige Schatkowsky named MHSAA athlete of the week

Paige Schatkowsky, a Grade 11 centre for the Vincent Massey Trojans basketball team, was named Manitoba High School Athletics Association athlete of the week on Jan. 18.

Averaging 20 plus points, 10 rebounds and eight assists a game, Schatkowsky was an all-star in the Pembina Trails Classic, where she led the team to a third place finish. She was also an MVP at the Sisler Spartan Classic recently, which the Trojans won.

Coach Stacy Hawash states in a release that “Paige is a dominant varsity girls basketball player. She can handle the ball or take it inside. She is the centre of our team and great leader on and off the court.”

Schatkowsky also competes in volleyball and track and field at the Fort Garry-based school.
