Hey there, time traveller!

Garden City has always been known for its abundance of flowers — both in local yards and in our street names. Pride of ownership can be seen throughout our area in the beautiful gardens and yards cared for by local residents.

To help recognize this hard work, I am excited to announce a new neighbourhood gardening contest called Garden City Blooms, whereby residents are being asked to nominate their favourite local gardens and yards, including their own.

Everyone is encouraged to participate, including kids. Gardening can be done in any size of yard or even on a balcony. The key is to have fun and get creative with colours and plants.

There is no limit on the number of addresses you can nominate, and every address nominated will be entered to win a prize.

You can submit addresses and a photo to: gardencitywinnipeg@gmail.com or submit via the Garden City Residents’ Association pages on Facebook or Instagram.

The deadline to enter is July 18 and winners will be announced right here in The Times later in July.

I am looking forward to being part of this year’s judging panel, alongside other local residents and Tom Ethans of Take Pride Winnipeg. The panel will review the photos and also visit addresses to select the winners.

With the current COVID-19 situation, most Winnipeg summer events have been cancelled. This contest will be a fun way to get out into your yard, keep a safe distance from others and recognize the incredible community spirit we have in Garden City. Residents can also follow along on social media using the hashtag #GardenCityBlooms

I’d like to say a big thank you to Riverside Greenhouses (set up at the corner of McPhillips Street and Jefferson Avenue), Coun. Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan) and Take Pride Winnipeg for generously supporting this new contest.

Together, we are excited to shine a spotlight on the incredible yards and gardens right here in Garden City.
