Jordy Wyant is 10 years old and she’s in Grade 4 at École R.H.G. Bonnycastle School. Her favourite class is gym and she does very well in school. Jordy is also a dynamic, smart and powerful defensive pillar for the South Winnipeg Kings hockey team.<\/p>\n

Jordy’s been playing hockey for five years and is the only girl on the team. She wears number 10 and I asked why.<\/p>\n

“Well, it’s my mom’s favourite number, and it’s my favourite number, and I’m turning 10,” she said.<\/p>\n

Jordy is a big Winnipeg Jets fan and she has an autographed Bryan Little stick.<\/p>\n

“He gave his stick away at the skills competition, and I have it at home!”<\/p>\n

I asked Jordy if she could pick a defensive partner play with from the Jets who would it be.<\/p>\n

“(Dustin) Byfuglien,” she said. “Because he is very good at defence.”<\/p>\n

When I talked to Jordy, you could hear her passion for the game of hockey. I asked her what she liked most about it.<\/p>\n

“The fun of it. When you get a chance to score and your teammates congratulate you, and when you shake hands and show good sportsmanship.”<\/p>\n

Jordy’s family is quite active. Her parents, Janice and Graeme, and her younger brother, Riley, all enjoy sports. Actually, Jordy came to love hockey through watching her mom play.<\/p>\n

“It was very fun to watch my mom play. I used to skate with her team.”<\/p>\n

Janice beams when she speaks of her daughter.<\/p>\n

“She amazes me. It’s a joy to watch her play with the boys. She gives her all, she is a big competitor.”<\/p>\n

Jordy wanted to make sure I said hi to two of her friends, Annika and Bryanna.<\/p>\n

She also had some advice for other youngsters who want to play hockey.<\/p>\n

“It’s really fun to play because of your teammates. When you try to skate, it’s hard, but just try your best.”  <\/p>\n
