Photo by Jared Story\nMaples Collegiate teachers Saul Henteleff and Murray Stardom are organizing the first 7 Oaks Student Film Festival.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n“It’s important for student films to be seen,” said Maples teacher Saul Henteleff, the organizer of the festival.<\/p>\n
“I’ve done a lot of work in a previous life as a media educator, working in Winnipeg School Division and the Royal Conservatory of Music, and I just feel very strongly that student films don’t get the public screening they deserve and need.”<\/p>\n
Henteleff approached Maples principals Blair Peppler and Verland Force with the film festival idea, and he said they were on board immediately.<\/p>\n
“We have the facilities, we have the technology, it’s just a perfect fit,” Henteleff said.
“There’s also an existing film program here, as well as a Grade 9 option (Intro to Filmmaking 15F). Murray Stardom and Curtis Walker (Maples teachers) are making films here as well. They’re doing animations and other things.<\/p>\n
“We have the right combination of people to support it and there are a lot of people in the division already making films, so let’s get everybody together and celebrate what the kids are doing.”<\/p>\n
So far, Maples Collegiate, Leila North Community School, Belmont School, Garden City Collegiate and the Wayfinders after-school program have films in progress or have submitted films to the festival.<\/p>\n
Henteleff also wants to celebrate what the broader film community is doing. The festival will also include lunchtime screenings of films from the Winnipeg Film Group and the National Film Board from April 14 to 16.<\/p>\n
“Let’s show them (the students) what other filmmakers are doing, show them that Winnipeg films are awesome and you don’t have to be a Hollywood film producer in order to make brilliant, fun, entertaining films,” Henteleff said.<\/p>\n
Stardom said the 7 Oaks Student Film Festival is a way of “building a film community” within the division.<\/p>\n
“Whether it’s (a teacher’s) first experiment with using film with their class or they’ve been running a film program for six years at their school, it’s a chance to share their work and hopefully get some attention for the film work that’s being done across the division,” Stardom said.<\/p>\n
“I’m hoping other teachers will see it and say ‘That’s something achievable, maybe I can do that next year.’ It’s kind of a launching pad.<\/p>\n
Henteleff said the student films should be no longer than five minutes, with March 28 being the deadline for submissions.<\/p>\n
The public is welcome to attend the 7 Oaks Student Film Festival gala. Admission is free. The gala will also be streamed online at www.channel7oaks.org<\/p>
