According to Paragg, they walked down Hamilton Avenue, stopped at the Vimy Arena (255 Hamilton Ave.), and collected water from Sturgeon Creek. The students — armed with a required minimum of two two-litre jugs or containers — filled their vessels with water to bring back to the school.

“We will use that water to help us in our courtyard gardens, our front gardens, and actually use it for different sustainable purposes,” Paragg explained.

Kemball said she wanted to expose her classmates to the reality and exhaustion of carrying water as well as build a school in an undeveloped country because she thinks it’s easy to forget how lucky most of us are, and the walk was a reminder that some people aren’t as fortunate.

“I get to go to school every day, and we get our water practically given to us. We can go to water fountains, and it takes 30 seconds,” Kemball said.

Proceeds collected from the Walk for Water — whether it be pledges collected from community members or money from other fundraisers held by the school – will go towards building a school through Free the Children’s Brick by Brick Initiative.

Supplied photo
John Taylor Collegiate students with the water collected during their Walk for Water.

Right now, the high school raised $3,500 through pledges, donations, and fundraisers, but $10,000 is needed to build a school.
