Photo by Dan Falloon\nFormer Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute Hawk midfielder Navreen Sidhu hopes to help the Providence College Pilots this coming season.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\nBut she’d played recreational soccer for most of her career, rising to Phoenix FC’s premier program on two different occasions before deciding that level wasn’t a fit for her.<\/p>\n
She admitted being a little shocked at being pursued by a college-level club.<\/p>\n
“At first, I couldn’t believe it because I didn’t really take it seriously because I’ve been playing rec soccer all my life,” she said. “I was (asking) ‘Are you looking at the right person here?’”<\/p>\n
Sidhu said she stresses education above all else, and upon discovering Providence is on the exact same page, made the decision to start classes in athletic therapy in the hopes of eventually becoming a physiotherapist. She also considered attending the University of Winnipeg.<\/p>\n
The five-foot-nine Sidhu described herself as a speedy, versatile player who can play all outfield positions, but feels her skill set is best shown as a midfielder.<\/p>\n
“All the skills I have really shine in that area — my speed and my ability to control the ball,” she said.<\/p>\n
Sidhu said she’d won a championship with Bronx Park Community Centre and another as part of the Phoenix program, but the nailbiting win over West Kildonan this past season was a standout in her career.<\/p>\n
“The school is more (about) volleyball, so we made history by winning the KPAC finals,” she said.<\/p>\n
The defending Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference champions are excited to bring Sidhu into the fold.<\/p>\n
“Navreen will bring lots of versatility to our attack, with the ability to play multiple positions. She is very intelligent and has great leadership characteristics. We couldn’t be happier to have her,” Pilots head coach Giancarlo Calla said in a release on the Providence College website.<\/p>\n
Sidhu’s MBCI teammate, Katie Smolders of FC Northwest, will join her at Providence.
Sidhu also plays basketball, volleyball, badminton, and track and field.<\/p>\n
