The candidates running for school trustee in the Louis Riel School Division Ward 2 are Colleen Mayer, Chris Sigurdson and Chris Wilson. Two candidates will be selected in Ward 2.<\/p>\n

Name: Colleen Mayer <\/strong><\/p>\n

Age:<\/strong> 43<\/p>\n

Occupation:<\/strong> Executive director of the Old St. Vital Business Improvement Zone.<\/p>\n

Trustee experience, if applicable:<\/strong> Three years. I was elected on Nov. 26, 2011.

Why are you running?<\/strong> Investing in our children, starting at the earliest age, allows for a better future for us all. Since elected to the board of trustees, I have worked with my colleagues, administration, parents, students, and community leaders to ensure that public education continues to be provided in a safe and inclusive manner for our children.<\/p>\n

The Louis Riel School Division’s priorities of developing strong literacy and numeracy skills; providing academic, emotional, physical and intellectual engagement in learning, and demonstrating skill to be active citizens within our community are all key to the success of our students.<\/p>\n

Trustee experience, if applicable:<\/strong> I was first elected as a trustee in 2010 and am the current finance chair. I am running for re-election this time.<\/p>\n

Why are you running?<\/strong> I’ve lived in this ward all of my life and my two kids go to school here. I wanted to run to give back to the community and the public school system. My parents were teachers and I have always been interested in education issues.<\/p>\n

Why are you running?<\/strong> This is my third time running for school trustee.<\/p>\n

I believe that the schools keep making fundamental mistakes and they need an injection of common sense.<\/p>\n

Mistake No.1: They will pass a student to the next grade even when the student has not completed the necessary material from their present grade.<\/p>\n

No. 2: They cannot fire bad teachers and reward great teachers.<\/p>\n

No. 3: They have a goal to develop responsible global citizens instead of Canadian citizens.<\/p>\n

No. 4: There are 50,000 less students and 255 more teachers today than there were in 1975. These numbers don’t make sense.<\/p>\n
