In planning June’s festivities, Chris Yaremkiewich, George V’s phys-ed teacher, said the school has been consulting regularly with alumni.<\/p>\n
“The general consensus is they want a place to meet, catch up with their peers and have that very casual opportunity,” Yaremkiewich said.<\/p>\n
To facilitate that social aspect, the 100th anniversary celebration will include a come-and-go tea room set up in George V’s gym, where students and families can mingle with alumni on the afternoon of June 5.<\/p>\n
The tea room in the gym will also host a performance from a local guitar group.<\/p>\n
“They’ll be performing a repertoire of music from the last 100 years,” Silva said. “So that’s kind of neat, too.”<\/p>\n
“We also have an artist, Annie Bergen, coming to do a mural,” Yaremkiewich added. <\/p>\n
“Through collaboration with some of the students in the school, they’ll be getting together to decide how to portray the 100 years of George V School in a mural in one of our hallways.”<\/p>\n
On June 6 — weather permitting — the parent council will be throwing a carnival, with activities, food, and a silent auction, with proceeds going towards building a new playstructure for the school.<\/p>\n
The cornerstone for George V School was laid in August 1915, opening to 235 students a year later, in September 1916.<\/p>\n

Today, there are 262 students at George V School, roughly two thirds of whom are French immersion students.<\/p>\n
The school is also in the midst of ordering 100th anniversary wear, in both the current forest green as well as the retro royal purple and gold. They’ve even designed a logo that incorporates both the traditional crown and the current Grizzly mascot.<\/p>\n
