The annual event, which is dubbed RU BUCK ENUF, is organized by Grade 11 and 12s on student council, under direction of teachers Colin McDonald and Melissa Vince.

“It’s like a big Amazing Race,” explained Alyssa Fedyck, a member of student council who is starting Grade 12 at Miles Mac this year. “You get to know the new people. It’s a lot of teamwork, a lot of fun! I think you’ve got to get it in all schools.”

Knight came on board last year, and returns this year as an ambassador of the Gimme 5 program, an anti-bullying initiative that builds on the positive energy of the RU BUCK ENUF event.

“It’s kind of an icebreaker for our Grade 10s, a way for our 11s and 12s to make them feel welcome in our school,” explained an enthusiastic McDonald. “The premise behind it is getting people to say ‘Hi’ to five new people.”

For RU BUCK ENUF 2014, McDonald was able to get Cormac and Nicole Foster, from Amazing Race Canada, to take part in the event. So he knew he’d have to do something special again this year.

Luckily, McDonald didn’t have to look far. Buckeyes alumni Panicland, who recently completed a five-month tour across Canada and have spent the summer in L.A. recording and scouting an international record deal, will be performing an acoustic set at the event, and will be taking part in the scavenger hunt.

“It feels really good to come back and play at our school,” said Ian Willmer, who plays bass in Panicland.

“One of the good things about this school is it’s not just focused on sports, or theatre, or music. It’s focused on everything,” said Panicland singer Braedon Horbacio. “They’re really trying to include everyone, and I think that’s one of the best things about Miles Mac.”

Facebook.com/TheHeraldWPG
Twitter: @heraldWPG
<div
