Jim Carr went out on election night and painted Winnipeg South Centre red.<\/p>\n

Liberal candidate Carr, 63, beat Conservative incumbent Joyce Bateman handily to take the hotly contested riding.<\/p>\n

Nationally, the Liberal Party of Canada dominated the polls securing 184 seats (at press time) to form a majority government.<\/p>\n

At Carr’s election night headquarters at the Centro Caboto (1055 Wilkes Ave.) the atmosphere was raucous. Over 200 people were in attendance to celebrate the Liberal win in Winnipeg South Centre.<\/p>\n

“It’s great, it’s great!” Carr supporter Darshan Kaila said. “I’ve known Jim for a long time and he’s been very involved in the community.”<\/p>\n

Kaila, who spent the evening door knocking before arriving at the Liberal headquarters, said the win was expected. Though he predicted a Liberal sweep nationally, the majority mandate was still a surprise.<\/p>\n

“It means we get to make a change and get rid of Harper,” the self-described hardcore Liberal said.<\/p>\n

“We stick together,” he said of the overwhelming win.<\/p>\n

According to Elections Canada, voter turnout in the riding was at 76.75 per cent. After all polls had reported, Carr had earned over 17,000 more votes than Bateman and NDP candidate Matt Henderson had pulled in 4,727 votes. Green Party candidate Andrew Park took 1,914.<\/p>\n

Carr’s official agent Jaclyn Sault said the change in leadership at both the local and national level is exciting to see and she never doubted the local momentum. This is the first time Sault has held a position on a political campaign and to great results.<\/p>\n

“I’m excited he won and I’m not surprised,” she said. “He had a great team behind him and he’s a great candidate.”<\/p>\n

“I didn’t necessarily expect this nationally,” she added. “I think it’s time for real change in Canada.”<\/p>\n

Carr, who celebrated the win with his family at his side, was president of the Business Council of Manitoba prior to stepping down to run for public office. He was Liberal MLA for Fort Rouge between 1988 and 1990, and for Crescentwood between 1990 and 1992.<\/p>\n

Former head of CancerCare Manitoba Dr. Dahli Dahliwal was in attendance to celebrate Carr’s win.<\/p>\n

Though not overtly political or partisan, Dahliwal said he chose to support the Liberals and Jim Carr because of Canada’s national reputation, saying it had become a pariah.<\/p>\n

“We felt there was too much intolerance and bigotry,” Dahliwal said. “We couldn’t stay silent.”<\/p>\n

Part of Carr’s success may have come from a strong movement to encourage strategic voting to oust Conservative candidate Bateman.<\/p>\n

During the election campaign, strategic vote organizers Leadnow (votetogether.ca) and strategicvoting.ca both endorsed Carr as the best choice to defeat the Conservative candidate.<\/p>\n

At Bateman’s headquarters, at Mona Lisa Ristorante Italiano (1697 Corydon Ave.) the mood was much more subdued.<\/p>\n

For parts of the evening the small restaurant dining room was quiet with only a few supporters in attendance. Bateman was absent from the party until after the polls closed.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the evening,at Henderson’s Osborne Street campaign headquarters volunteers worked the phones religiously stopping only when an electric kettle may have caused a fuse to blow.<\/p>\n

The strong push to get supporters to the polls didn’t garner the results the campaign had hoped for, but volunteers at the office weren’t despondent.<\/p>\n

Michael Kvern, a former student of Henderson’s who was working his first federal election since reaching the age of majority, said he got a real taste of Canada’s electoral system.<\/p>\n

“It’s been a fantastic experience,” Kvern, 18, said, adding that he spent the evening going door-to-door and speaking to his neighbours.<\/p>\n

Though the result was not what he had hoped, Kvern said he will still work to hold the newly elected Jim Carr accountable.<\/p>\n

“It’s the democratic process,” he said. “I have to accept that. They’re still my MP.”<\/p>
