Building a snow fort, igloo or snow sculpture is part of winter’s outdoor fun for children living in snowy climes, and construction can be much quicker with the right tool.<\/p>\n

Enter the Snow Saw, a lightweight plastic saw manufactured by Oak Bluff’s Corey Bossuyt, retailing for $16.<\/p>\n

Bossuyt said he can’t claim to have invented the saw as he’s aware that a Saskatchewan company was making and selling a similar item at one time. However, that company ceased operations and he adapted the design to make what he believes to be a better saw.<\/p>\n

“The design from the Saskatchewan company had some flaws,” he said.<\/p>\n

Bossuyt operates a small plastic fabrication company, and he began making pliable saws out of arena board. This material allows the saw to stay flexible yet strong in cold temperatures.
He now has a Winnipeg company making the saws.<\/p>\n

Starting with sales of about 100 saws 10 years ago, Bossuyt estimates that he sold more than 1,000 last year. While he has a small ad in the Macdonald-Headingley Recreation District’s Winter Resource Guide, and also recently placed another ad in a national publication, Bossuyt said he decided early on not to invest in advertising, and most of his sales come through word-of-mouth and the company website.<\/p>\n

However, word is spreading and he recently packed up an order of snow saws for a client in Alaska.<\/p>\n

“We’re almost selling across Canada now,” he said. His product has proved to be popular with schools since students often construct snow dwellings and sculptures as winter projects.<\/p>\n
