Dean Moxham said he knew something was wrong soon after he and the rest of Team Manitoba arrived in Digby, N.S. for the 2016 Everest Senior Men’s Curling Championship on March 26.<\/p>\n

During the team’s practice on Sunday morning, the Portage la Prairie resident who is third on Randy Neufeld’s La Salle rink, said he had to leave the ice and head for the hospital. Later that day he had an emergency appendectomy.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Headliner<\/em> on March 31, Moxham said he’s feeling better. Although he regrets missing out on playing at the Everest championship, he’s looking forward to being back on the ice when the team represents Canada at the world championships in Karlstad, Sweden from April 15 to 23.<\/p>\n

“I’d rather play in Sweden than here,” he said.<\/p>\n

Neufeld and lead Dale Michie, of Portage la Prairie, and third Peter Nicholls from Winnipeg, were joined by Dale Brooks, who is at the championship as coach of Manitoba’s senior women’s team. Neufeld said the curling championship rules don’t allow teams to have a fifth, so he’s just glad Brooks was able to step in.<\/p>\n

Neufeld’s rink advanced to the championship pool and won their first game against Prince Edward Island 8-5 on March 31. Later that day they were matched against the rink from Newfoundland and Labrador.<\/p>\n

Asked who he views as being the biggest competitors in Digby, Neufeld said, “Ontario is pretty strong. There’s a number of pretty good rinks.”<\/p>\n
