A new street in south St. Vital has been named after a prominent former southeast Winnipegger. William Johnstone Court — a cul-de-sac located south of Aldgate Road — is named after the former RM of St. Vital councillor. Born in Scotland in 1884, Johnstone immigrated to Canada in 1911. An experienced cabinet maker, he found employment with the Canadian National Railway Company (CNR) before beginning his political career as a school trustee with the Woodlawn School Board in the mid-1920s. During his time as a councillor, between 1926 and 1946, Johnstone was on various committees and also served as deputy mayor at various times during his tenure. After his council career, Johnstone became the president of the St. Vital Agricultural Society, and also served as a director. He died in 1975.
