The Portage la Prairie Collegiate Institute Saints girls’ hockey team was battling hard as the first half of its 2016-17 season ended.<\/p>\n

Coach Jo-Anne Clark-Gillespie said she was pleased with the team’s record, which stood at eight wins, one overtime win and four losses after a close 2-1 loss to the J.H. Bruns Broncos on Dec. 19.<\/p>\n

“It was another loss where we have pretty much dominated the game in many aspects but were not able to put the puck into the back of the net. We did a lot of things well in the offensive zone but defensively two mistakes cost us the game,” Clark-Gillespie said in an email message after the Broncos game.<\/p>\n

The result left the Saints in fifth place in the Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League’s Winnipeg Free Press Division.<\/p>\n

Clark-Gillespie said the top six teams in the Free Press Division are all closely matched, and there’s still time for the Saints to pull ahead.<\/p>\n

“We have lots of hockey left in the season.”<\/p>\n

Five Grade 12 students play for the Saints, with two of those girls in their fourth seasons with the team. Two others have played for three years.<\/p>\n

Clark-Gillespie said the veterans help the novice players to improve their skills.<\/p>\n

One such veteran is team captain Bailey Grantham, 17, who has scored 33 points in 12 games, making her the Saints’ scoring leader.<\/p>\n

Grantham has already surpassed her 2015-16 total of 30 points, putting her on track to break her 2014-15 total of 39.<\/p>\n

“I think the season’s going well,” Grantham said. “Our team is really clicking well and coming together.”<\/p>\n

The team won their game against Miles Macdonell Buckeyes 3-1 on Dec. 21.<\/p>\n

The Saints next home game is against the Garden City Gophers on Jan. 12 at 4 p.m. in the BDO Centennial Community Centre (390 1st St. NW).<\/p>\n
