What a year at Institut Collegial Vincent Massey Collegiate.<\/p>\n

Many community members are aware by now that the Rick Hansen Foundation awarded the school $30,000 in support of its efforts to promote accessibility for students. But there are many more achievements of note this year.<\/p>\n

In January, ICVMC principal Tony Carvey was named one of Canada’s 40 outstanding principals by The Learning Partnership. Mr. Carvey was recognized for his attention to mental health initiatives, the benefits of inclusiveness and for the aforementioned accessibility improvements.<\/p>\n

There is only one “Outstanding Educator of the Year” award in Manitoba and this year it was earned by Marsha Barter-Cook, who works for Pembina Trails Career and Community Experiences. Marsha works with students with special needs, assisting them to learn how to fit into the workplace after graduation. I have first-hand experience with Marsha’s excellent abilities after hosting a work experience for one of her students.<\/p>\n

ICVMC students have won a number of contests. The school’s video club received three awards at the Freeze Frame International Film Festival. Their film, Mia<\/em>, won for Best Acting, Best Live Action and Best Script\/Concept awards.<\/p>\n

On the athletic side, there were many notable and outstanding events. On March 20, Vincent Massey Collegiate Trojans varsity girls’ basketball team finished second in the provincial AAAA championships.<\/p>\n

The AAAA varsity boys cross-country won the Provincial Championship. AAAA junior varsity girls cross-country, AAAA boys indoor soccer and AAAA boys hockey were all provincial finalists this year.<\/p>\n

The AAAA junior varsity boys volleyball team was a West Winnipeg Athletic Conference finalist. The AAAA varsity football team was an ANAVETS Bowl finalist and the AAAA junior varsity football team is the Home Run Sports Bowl Champion.<\/p>\n

And last but not least, the Vincent Massey Collegiate Trojans girls hockey team delivered their school’s first championship in the CTV Division 1 Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League. I look forward to visiting with members of this team and their coaches next month at the legislature.<\/p>\n

Bravo to Institut Collegial Vincent Massey Collegiate students, staff and parents for a wonderful year.<\/p>\n
