The yard waste collection program is important as it will help reach the city’s goal of keeping more than half of our garbage out of the landfill.<\/p>\n

In 2016, more than 26,000 tonnes of yard waste was collected through the curbside yard waste collection program and composted at the Brady Road Resource Management Facility. The composted material was used in city flower beds and to landscape finished landfill areas. I am so glad the Old Kildonan ward is doing its part.<\/p>\n

This year’s curbside yard waste collection program will begin the week of April 17 for homes in yard waste collection area “A” which includes our area. You can also drop off yard waste for free at the Pacific 4R Winnipeg Depot, 1120 Pacific Ave. or at the Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot, 1777 Brady Rd., south of the Perimeter Highway.<\/p>\n

Yard waste is collected at the curb once every two weeks, on the same collection day as recycling and garbage, and will continue to be collected until November.<\/p>\n

You can put your yard waste in:<\/p>\n

• Any reusable container without a lid (such as plastic tubs, old blue boxes, old metal or plastic garbage containers). Containers should not be broken or damaged;<\/p>\n

• Cardboard boxes;<\/p>\n

• Paper yard waste bags (available at many stores).<\/p>\n

Yard waste includes unlimited amounts of outside organic materials, such as grass clippings, leaves, plants, flowers, bush\/shrub clippings, and small tied bundles of branches no longer than one metre or heavier than 22 kilograms. <\/p>\n

Yard waste in plastic bags will not be accepted because the plastic bags do not decompose and will ruin the finished compost.<\/p>\n

There is no limit on how much you can put out for collection so long as your yard waste meets the criteria for what is accepted and is placed in the appropriate containers.<\/p>\n

 Please do not rake any yard waste material or debris onto the street as this can plug the street drains and cause ponding problems as well as it can increase the risk of basement flooding. <\/p>\n
