The do-it-yourself crowd in southwest Winnipeg has a new starting point for home improvement projects.<\/p>\n

Lowe’s officially opened its first Manitoban location at 1799 Kenaston Blvd. on Feb. 15.<\/p>\n

“We are thrilled to open our first Lowe’s location in Manitoba today and to bring Lowe’s exciting shopping experience to the Winnipeg community,” Guy Beaumier, executive vice-president of Lowe’s Big Box, said in a statement. “Our offer is tailored to meet all the home improvement needs of our DIY and contractor customers so we can help Canadians love where they live.”<\/p>\n

The home improvement big box store is part of the Linden Ridge Shopping Centre and is neighboured by a Canadian Tire, Brick, and a few doors down, The Home Depot. A RONA Home and Garden is also located at 1636 Kenaston Blvd.<\/p>\n

The building which went up over the past year is 115,000-square-feet with 90,000 of that dedicated to retail space. Officials say the investment is worth over $19-million and 130 permanent jobs have been created.<\/p>\n

At the store’s grand opening, the company also donated $5,000 to the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities.<\/p>\n

John Orlikow, city councillor for River Heights-Fort Garry, described the project as a major infill development that’s representative of the current climate in the Winnipeg housing market.<\/p>\n

“Lowe’s sees what’s happening in Winnipeg right now: a record amount of reinvestment in our old housing stock. We have the third-oldest housing stock in Canada and the number of building permits and permits in general for renovations in our homes is at a record high. That goes with a record of (permits for) new builds.<\/p>\n

“I’m very happy Lowe’s is here to help us reinvest in our housing stock,” Orlikow said.<\/p>\n

Managing the new store is Ed Golding, a former Winnipegger, who’s returned from Ontario to launch the business.<\/p>\n

The Canadian branch of Lowe’s is headquartered in Boucherville, Que. The company also previously acquired RONA in the spring of 2016.<\/p>
