Kawaljeet Singh Banwait was a multiple winner at Maples Collegiate’s recent Grade 12 graduation event.<\/div>\n

The high school student was one of the proud 349 Maples graduates. Kawaljeet not only took home his grad diploma and his high school power mechanics diploma, he also received the Schulich Leader Nominee award and the prestigious Mark  Dickof Memorial Scholarship — which was being presented for the first time. <\/p>\n

The Mark Dickof Scholarship was recently established by the Canadian Mental Health Association (Manitoba), city councillor Brian Mayes and the Manitoba School Board Association and is awarded to public school grads for outstanding leadership, dedication and personal initiative in the advancement of mental health well-being.<\/p>\n

Kawaljeet is a keen student who was on the honour roll in every grade in high school.<\/p>\n

In Grade 12, his combined average was 90 per cent. <\/p>\n

“As a new immigrant, I had to adapt quickly. I started my Canadian schooling in Grade 9. I challenged myself to study hard, and all the hard work paid off. I am very proud of my community involvements”, Kawaljeet said.<\/p>\n

The multi-talented and adaptable student also finds time to excel in sports, volunteering, music and tutoring struggling students. <\/p>\n

In sports; Kawaljeet is an avid cricketer and he was captain of Maples Collegiate cricket team. He is also a member of a field hockey team that competes in a city league. <\/p>\n

Kawaljeet also volunteers at the Society of Manitobans with Disabilities, Winnipeg Harvest and the Sikh Society of Manitoba. He is a skilled tabla player who helps less experienced musicians hone their skills.<\/p>\n

“ I truly enjoyed high school,” he said. “I’d like to thank my parents, teachers and my peers for their guidance. I will pursue my studies in engineering and would like to have a career in mechanical engineering.” <\/p>\n
