Lucien Spence is a local country singer, songwriter and musician who started singing at age six and playing guitar at 12.<\/div>\n
His love of music evolved into a way of telling stories about his Indigenous background and his people, and now he’s writing songs that relate to everyone globally.<\/div>\n
The music of this Valley Gardens resident can be heard across Canada on Golden West Radio stations, on Indigenous radio stations throughout North America and via Sirius XM satellite radio.<\/div>\n
Lucien credits his recent success to the help of his songwriting and business partner, Portage la Prairie businessman Dave Rodgers, who inspired him to “branch out of the box to write and sing for everyone.”<\/div>\n
Spence explains that Rodgers “helped him to take an idea, and build a story from start to finish.”<\/div>\n
They began writing about their friendship and visits with one another in the song With My Friend; then they wrote a slower love song, By the River, and then, while dreaming of making it big, they wrote Nashville Ready.  <\/div>\n
This past summer, the two travelled to Nashville to get a feel for the country scene and to gauge response to Lucien, his music and his presence.  <\/div>\n
Spence recalls seeing guitars hanging in their hotel lobby and asking if he could play one. The manager was so impressed that Lucien was invited to play in the hotel lounge that night. The next night Spence played at Nashville hotspot Tootsies and then he and Rodgers moved on to Memphis, where he played at Wild Bill’s and on famous Beale Street.<\/div>\n
Spence is currently working on his fourth album (his previous recordings are available  on Spotify and iTunes) and he’s hoping for a 2019 Indigenous Music Awards nomination.<\/div>\n
I’ve twice had the great pleasure of hearing Lucien sing live and his voice and guitar are truly special. Treat yourself and take a listen to this up-and-coming talent. <\/div>\n
He says he hopes to “continue to make music that people can enjoy and keep writing and making music”.<\/div>\n
