Congratulations to the Maples Collegiate pom team, which represented Manitoba and Canada and placed fourth at the 2019 World School Performance Cheer Championships held in Orlando, Fla., from Feb. 1 to 3. The super-talented high school students competed alongside teams from 116 countries.<\/div>\n

Pom is a form of cheerleading, consisting of ground-bound dance and cheering, utilizing various forms of dance set to fast-paced music. Students use pompoms during their performances, which often include different jumps, demonstrations of flexibility, precise timing and endurance. Pom is different from cheerleading, as it does not involve tossing athletes into the air (stunting).<\/p>\n

Maples Collegiate earned the honour of representing Manitoba by winning both the 2017 and 2018 senior pom category at the Manitoba Association of Cheerleading’s Prairie Provincial Championships.<\/p>\n

The 2019 World Championships and student cultural exchange were held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex at Walt Disney World.<\/p>\n

The trip was a huge undertaking for the students and teachers. <\/p>\n

“It was a once in lifetime opportunity for the 21 students and four teachers\/coaches,” said teacher Kelcie Terrick.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, the Manitoba Association of Cheerleading and International Cheer Union offered a partially paid bid that covered the cost of registration fees, a five-night stay at the Disney All Star Resorts, and passes to both the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex and Disney World parks. <\/p>\n

Participating at the World School Performance Cheer Championships was a first for the province. The tremendous success of the students is a credit to their dedication to the sport. <\/p>\n

The unceasing commitments of teachers\/ coaches Terrick, Majda Miljkovic, Ashlee Venables, as well as the team’s choreographer, former student Alyssa Panesa, made a huge contribution to the success of the pom program.<\/p>\n
