{"id":505679201,"date":"2019-02-11T14:14:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T20:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/our-communities\/metro\/2019\/02\/11\/locals-taking-to-the-stage-for-cabaret"},"modified":"2019-02-11T14:19:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T20:19:56","slug":"locals-taking-to-the-stage-for-cabaret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/our-communities\/metro\/2019\/02\/11\/locals-taking-to-the-stage-for-cabaret","title":{"rendered":"Locals taking to the stage for cabaret"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">Nine local artists are taking to the stage next month to share the experiences of real and imagined female characters during International Women&rsquo;s Week.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">The performances are part of Sarasv&agrave;ti Productions&rsquo; Cabaret of Monologues event, which was started in 2003 to address a lack of female representation in the theatre community.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">&ldquo;When we started, women as playwrights and actors were below 30 per cent of what we were seeing on stages,&rdquo; Sarasv&agrave;ti artistic director Hope McIntyre said. &ldquo;By doing a cabaret of monologues we could get multiple women&rsquo;s experiences into one event.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">The work touches on everything from sexuality to illness to media representation to disability and is connect by the theme, &ldquo;Here I Am.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">&ldquo;This notion of identity really tied them all together, being proud of your identity, being confident in who you are and being willing to go against the norm to express yourself,&rdquo; McIntyre said.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">Wolseleyite Ren&eacute;e Hill and West Ender Lauren Marshall are both performing in the cabaret for the first time.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">Hill studied theatre at the University of Winnipeg and decided to return to her theatre roots several years ago as a stay-at-home mother of three.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">She plays a data scientist who loses her job after blowing the whistle on her employer in Oracle Jane written by Vicki Zhang. Hill&rsquo;s character returns home to China to share the bad news with her mother.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think we ever want to let anybody down and this woman has to let the one person in her life who has always been on her side down,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It takes a lot of bravery and courage to do that.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"width: 1px;height: 1px;overflow: hidden\">Hill is excited about the diversity of female experiences presented at the cabaret.
