Martha Jo Willard thinks we have a climate crisis on our hands. This is why she’s running for the Notre Dame riding under the Green Party of Manitoba.<\/p>\n

Willard said if elected, the Green Party can help push the other parties towards action on climate change.<\/p>\n

“I think they understand that change is afoot, and (the other parties) are looking for guidance on how to make those changes,” Willard said. “We’ve done a lot of the research already; we’ve got plans ready to roll out. We can certainly be the educators and bring everyone to the same side.”<\/p>\n

Willard is originally from the U.S., born and raised in Lebanon, Mo. She earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife conservation at the University of Missouri in 1971, which is when she got interested in the environment.<\/p>\n

In 1990, Willard was accepted into medical school at the University of Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg. After working in rural Manitoba, she came back to the city and worked as a family physician from 2010 to 2016.
She ran for MLA in Brandon West in 2007, MP in Brandon-Souris in 2008 and Portage-Lisgar in 2011. She ran for MLA in Minto in 2015.<\/p>\n

Willard said climate change overlaps with poverty in a big way.<\/p>\n

“(The Green Party of Manitoba’s) anti-poverty programs are so important. The people affected by climate change are the same people affected by poverty,” Willard said. “Doesn’t matter what happens, it’s always the guys at the bottom that take the beating. I really think the Green Party is an all-encompassing party.  We want to make a level playing field for everyone.”<\/p>\n

Also running for office are Malaya Marcelino (NDP), Donovan Martin (Lib.), Marsha Street (PC), Andrew Taylor (CPM) and Margaret Sturby (MBFWD). Street, Taylor and Sturby could not be reached in time for publication.<\/em><\/p>
