The provincial election has come and gone. While a couple races were tight, with the exception of Transcona, voters chose to stick with their incumbents in northeast Winnipeg.<\/div>\n
Incumbent Progressive Conservative MLAs Cathy Cox (Kildonan-River East), James Teitsma (Radisson), and Andrew Micklefield (Rossmere) were all re-elected to the Legislature.<\/div>\n
“I’m humbled and honoured,” said Cox, who won the newly minted Kildonan-River East constituency with 5,514 votes, as her team of volunteers celebrated at her campaign headquarters. “I’m thrilled, and it’s all thanks to my team.”<\/div>\n
Elliot Macdonald, the NDP candidate for Kildonan-River East, received 3,673 votes, while Liberal candidate Kathryn Braun finished with 1,602.<\/div>\n
“We did a heck of a job,”  said Macdonald, a 37-year-old vice-principal at Edmund Partridge Community School. “We put on a valiant effort. Next time, we’ll have a real good chance to take it.”<\/div>\n
First elected in 2016, Teitsma was re-elected in Radisson with 4,523 votes, nearly 1,000 more than NDP candidate Raj Sandhu.<\/div>\n
“It was a satisfying win locally, and for the party in the province,” Teitsma said. “Now my constituents have given me a second mandate, it’s time to get back to work.”<\/div>\n
“I’m very pleased, and humbled,” Micklefield said at HalfTime Sports Bar on Gateway Road, where he gathered with family, friends, and supporters as the polls closed. “I think the proof is in the results this evening.”<\/div>\n
With 4,362 votes, Micklefield edged out Andy Regier, the NDP candidate, by only 754 votes.<\/div>\n
“The result was not what we hoped for or worked so hard far, but the margins show we’re growing, and we’re delivering our message,” said Regier, who was an organizer of the Save the Concordia ER campaign. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done, and this is a big step in the right direction.”<\/div>\n
Incumbent NDP MLAs Matt Wiebe (Concordia) and Jim Maloway (Elmwood) were also re-elected.<\/div>\n
“Across the province, we are going to keep fighting,” Wiebe, who with 4,284 votes finished nearly 2,000 votes ahead of PC candidate Andrew Frank, told supporters at his campaign headquarters as results came in. “And next time, we are going to win.”<\/div>\n
“I’ve always believed you win the election before it’s even called,” said Jim Maloway, who was re-elected in Elmwood, receiving 3,862 votes, while Mayra Dubon (PC) finished with 2,533 votes.<\/div>\n
First elected to the Legislature in 1986, Maloway is the longest serving MLA for the NDP. Along with Wiebe, he has been a vocal opponent to the closure of Concordia’s ER.<\/div>\n
“I’m happy that we have an urgent care at Concordia, but I’m not happy that it’s not been fully restored,” he said. “We’ll keep working on that. The public was very engaged in that issue, and I expect they’ll continue to be.”<\/div>\n
In Transcona, the NDP’s Nello Altomare, a former teacher and administrator in the River East Transcona School Division, defeated incumbent Blair Yakimoski (PC) by 115 votes, 4,029 to 3,914.<\/div>\n
North of the Perimeter Highway in the new constituency of Red River North, which includes the RM of East St. Paul, Jeff Wharton was elected by a wide margin, receiving 5,566 votes, while Chris Pullen (NDP) received 2,387.<\/div>\n
“Manitobans, in particular in Red River North, weren’t anxious for change,” Wharton said. “I’m looking forward to getting to work with council members and reeves, and engaging with constituents, to grow our support in the riding and meeting more folks as we go forward over the next four years.”<\/div>\n
Formerly, East St. Paul was a part of the constituency of St. Paul, which was represented by Ron Schuler, who was re-elected this time in the neighbouring constituency of Springfield-Richot.
