Liberal party incumbent Doug Eyolfson believes his record of working in Parliament over the past four years puts him in good stead.<\/p>\n

The 56-year-old former emergency room doctor was elected as MP for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley in 2015. He defeated then-PC candidate Steven Fletcher, who’s now running as the People’s Party of Canada’s candidate, to take the riding that covers much of Winnipeg’s western section and the RM of Headingley.<\/p>\n

Eyolfson said he considers his work on the issues of providing aid for homeless service veterans, developing policies to deal with violence against health care workers, and work to introduce a national pharmacare program as being the highlights of his time on Parliament Hill.
He said the national pharmacare program could be rolled out in 2022.<\/p>\n

“Pharmacare would represent a tremendous improvement for most people,” he said.<\/p>\n

With his personal background in health care, Eyolfson said he’s aware that many of his constituents are concerned about issues relating to this area, even though health care delivery is a provincial matter. The Liberal Party is committed to providing more money in federal transfers to the provinces and territories to spend on health care.<\/p>\n

Eyolfson said he became aware of the lack of support available for Canada’s military veterans through meeting with members of the military living and working within the Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley riding, which includes 17 Wing Winnipeg.<\/p>\n

This prompted him to join the standing committee on veterans affairs. “I knew a lot of veterans were involved in health issues, and I wanted to be on that committee.”<\/p>\n

Eyolfson said it’s vital that the federal government work with other levels of government to address the meth crisis. The federal government completed a cross-country study on the issue with recommendations on short-, medium- and long-term actions.<\/p>\n

“Short-term harm reduction is the key,” he said. Over the longer term, more money is needed for mental health, detox and rehabilitation programs, as well as to help reduce poverty and homelessness that increase the likelihood of people turning to addictive drugs.<\/p>\n

Eyolfson said during his chats with local residents, he’s found out that seniors are looking for care facilities that meet their needs, and more health care support.<\/p>\n

He’s pleased that the Liberal Party has announced, if it retains a majority government, Old Age Security payments for those age 75 and over will be increased and the Canada Pension Plan survivors’ benefit.<\/p>\n
