Nelson Mayer has been making people laugh across Winnipeg and beyond recently — and there’s a lot more to come. <\/div>\n
Last month, the St. Vital-based comedian won first place in the Comedian of the North competition, which was held at Crickets Comedy Club in Thunder Bay on Jan. 17 and 18. <\/div>\n
And now, the 43-year-old is preparing to take part in two upcoming fundraisers. The first will be held at Crickets Comedy Club in Winnipeg (331B Smith St.) on Wed., Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available at the door. <\/div>\n
The show is a fundraiser for the Isaiah Wildlife Sanctuary in Emo, Ont., which has been run for nearly 20 years by Michael Scheibler, who operates the sanctuary on only his pension and donations he receives, Mayer said. At press time, the show was scheduled to be headlined by Big Daddy Tazz and feature Mayer and Clayton T. Stewart. It will be hosted by Chris Basso. <\/div>\n
“Scheibler is known as The Bearman of Emo, and he doesn’t receive any grants, so I thought it was a great opportunity to do something and help out. I’ve done lots of charity shows, and like to do my part to show my support,” Mayer said, noting Tazz has a “huge heart and is hilarious.” <\/div>\n
The second show, which Mayer will headline, is also a fundraiser for the sanctuary, and it will be held in Kenora, Ont. at Bob’s Burger Bar (152 Main Street South) on Wed., Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. Tickets are also $15. <\/div>\n
In terms of the Comedian of the North competition, Winnipegger Angie St. Mars came in second, and Luke Lynndale finished third. Mayer’s prize included a crown and $2,500. Mayer said the comedians he competed against are a “great group of people” and any of them could have picked up the crown. <\/div>\n
Also on the horizon for Mayer is a tour of the Wesman area in May, when he will headline the Unusual Suspects tour in locations such as Brandon, Shilo and Dauphin. More details will be available nearer the time. <\/div>\n
