The University of Winnipeg’s athletics confirmed last week that Phil Hudson, interim head coach of the Wesmen women’s volleyball team, will take on the position full time for the 2020 season and beyond.<\/p>\n

Dave Crook, director of athletics, said they were excited to formalize Hudson’s role.
“We are excited to have Phil as our full-time coach,” Crook said. “He did a tremendous job this past season and, with him in charge full-time, we look forward to a bright future for our student-athletes in the Wesmen women’s volleyball program.”<\/p>\n

Under Hudson’s guidance, the Wesmen  finished the season with a 9-15 record and made the playoffs for the first time since 2011-2012. It was also the first nine-win season for the Wesmen since 2012-2013.<\/p>\n

Hudson, a longtime coach at Dakota Collegiate, said he’s excited to get to work.<\/p>\n

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue on with the Wesmen program and for the confidence Dave Crook and the university has shown in me,” Hudson said. “I am looking forward to the upcoming season and continuing the progress we made over the past year.”<\/p>\n

Last season, the Wesmen led the Canada West division in kills, assists and digs.<\/p>\n

Among their most significant victories was a sweep of then-No. 8 Thompson Rivers on Jan. 3, a sweep at UBC-Okanagan Jan. 10, which was the program’s first win outside the province in four years, and a four-set win over Calgary that eliminated the Dinos from the post-season.<\/p>\n

Individually, third-year left side Emma Parker was named second-team all-Canada West, her first conference all-star selection and fourth-year libero Madison Fyvie set a program record for digs in a match (45) and digs in a season (374).<\/p>\n
