I’ve been in the newspaper game for a long time. When I started, at the University of Manitoba in the mid-1980s, reporters were still using typewriters and copy was manually entered into a huge typesetting computer with a tiny black and green screen.<\/p>\n

Many, many things have changed since then, chief among them being the fact we can now access and read news from around the world on mobile computers we carry in our pockets.<\/p>\n

Newspaper publishers have had to change and adapt as the world has gone digital and news-delivery platforms have evolved. When papers first began posting their content online, the vast majority let people have access for free. The thinking was that the size of online audiences would be enough to convince businesses and ad agencies to advertise on newspaper websites. The audiences were very large indeed, but the ad dollars flowed to even broader and deeper social media platforms and search engines.<\/p>\n

So, publishers began to ask online readers to pay to view their stories and photos.<\/p>\n

Here at Canstar Community News, we are part of the FP Canadian Newspapers group, which publishes the Winnipeg Free Press<\/em>, Brandon Sun<\/em> and several other papers.<\/p>\n

As such, all of our papers’ content has, for the past few years, been behind a soft paywall which asks readers to register their email addresses and, after they have read a certain number of articles, to pay a small fee per story or sign up for a subscription. It’s a model that has worked very well for the daily papers.<\/p>\n

However, since the printed versions of our weekly community newspapers are distributed free to every household in their coverage areas, we have now decided to ensure that readers of these papers can enjoy the same free access to our stories and photos on the web that they get with their printed copies at home.<\/p>\n
